'bhal tafal' is a short piece for wind quintet. The title of the piece is Maltese for "like clay". On the North West side of Malta, the island which gives the nation state its name, are large hill slopes made out of clay grains that spill on sand and sea. The piece is built out of a short harmonic progression that repeats, expands and contracts. Similar to the weathered blue-grey dusts of clay, the instruments move as one body yet constantly grind against each other.
